When Kamala Harris is inaugurated as Vice President, Governor Newsom will have the extraordinary constitutional privilege to appoint her replacement to the U.S. Senate.

Appointing someone of Asian descent to succeed her would not only recognize the unique history of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in California, but it would also preserve the space Senator Harris currently holds as a female member of the U.S. Senate with AAPI heritage.

California can boast of an impressive list of respected AAPI political leaders, such as Controller Betty Yee. In fact, 13% of the state Legislature is AAPI. Representation gains have been made at every level. In 1980 there were at least 160 AAPI elected officials in California, and by 2016 that number had grown 289% to 463.

That is why we should support Controller Betty, California’s chief independent fiscal watchdog, to be appointed to the United State Senate!

Subject Line: Drive the AAPI Legacy in CA: Appoint Controller Betty Yee to the US Senate

"Dear Governor Gavin Newsom,

My name is [FIRST AND LAST NAME], a California resident from [CITY], and I am urging you to consider State Controller Betty Yee for the US Senate appointment when Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris vacates her Senate Seat.

I understand that there is already pressure on you to replace Senator Harris with a woman of color. Appointing someone of Asian descent to succeed her would not only recognize the unique history of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in California, but it would also preserve the space Senator Harris currently holds as a female member of the U.S. Senate with AAPI heritage.

Reflective of perseverance and sheer numbers, the Asian American story is powerful. They are the fastest-growing ethnic group in America. California has the highest number of Asian Americans, nearing 7 million. AAPI consumer buying power is projected to grow 32% by 2023 to $1.3 billion. One third of that buying power is in California. We also create and run an immense number of businesses, primarily small and family-owned, supporting jobs and a sizeable part of the state’s tax base.

That is why I and the California Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce support Controller Yee, California’s chief independent fiscal watchdog, to be appointed to the United State Senate! She has served as State Controller since 2014, and has a distinguished public service career of more than 35 years. In fact, Betty is only the tenth woman to be elected to statewide office in the State of California. She has been a staunch supporter of API interests and deserves serious consideration, on behalf of all API’s in the State, to be appointed to represent California in the United States Senate.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

[FIRST AND LAST NAME]"
